will buying an antivirus software such as Norton Antivirus remove spyware, adware and pop ups from my computer

My computer seems to be infected with spyware. The bar at the bottom sometimes disappear and reappear. I have done a saf scan with Microsoft but at the end the problem remains. Right after the problem appeared, a program offeing to fix it pops up, it’s called WinIFixer and recommends me to get it. I don’t know what to do I have been thinking of going and purchasing a antivirus software from the store, but will that help remove the problem?

Is there a way to fix Disk Cleanup > Compress Old Files instead of just deleting the option from the registry?

So when I run Disk Cleanup —> Compress Old Files on my computer, It crashes my entire pc which then reboots. From what I’ve read, this is caused by the upgrade of Windows XP to SP2 or SP3.

Microsoft’s only answer to this is to go into RegEdit and just delete the entire option. That seems pretty stupid. I currently have 5 1/2 gigs of files that could be compressed if this option would work.

Does anyone know if there is a way to repair this without uninstalling the Service Packs?

"disk cleanup" "compress old files" crashes fix sp2 sp3
Here is the only option from Microsft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812248

This just deletes the ability to compress altogether. This seems like they took the easy way out. It’s like a car mechanic suggesting that if you keep getting flat tires, you should just take all of your tires off your car. Dumb.

The rest of my disk cleanup works. Just the compress function doesn’t.

Does CCCleaner compress as well?

"Conversion from string "" to type 'Integer' is not valid." problem when using TextBox.Text in variable in VB?

I often change the directory of my Desktop in the registry, so I thought, "Hey, why don’t I make an application to make this task easier!" So, I tried to do this in Visual Basic 2008.

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
FolderBrowserDialog1.Description = "Select a folder to be used as the Desktop."
FolderBrowserDialog1.ShowNewFolderButton = True
FolderBrowserDialog1.ShowDialog()
TextBox1.Text = FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath
End Sub

Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim desktop As String
Dim quote As String = """"
Dim applyA As String
desktop = FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath
applyA = "reg add ""HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"" /v Desktop /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d """(desktop) <——- This line highlighted yellow
Dim apply As String = (applyA)(quote)
Shell(apply)
End Sub

I didn’t have any mistakes in my code so I debugged it. Well, sadly, It highlighted the line above and said, "Conversion from string "C:\User\Thomas\Desktop (the contents of the TextBox or FolderBrowserDialog)" to type ‘Integer’ is not valid." I don’t get it! I’m not trying to convert a string to an integer!

Any help would be really appreciated :-D

I’m still learning.
By saying,

Dim quote As String = """"

I mean a single quotation mark as a variable. Because if a quotation mark is in the string that is already quoted (" " "), it would have to be this (" "" ") since when already in a quote, a quotation mark needs written twice.

Is there is a tool that has been deveolped to support Vista at all? A tool that is safe to use? Also reliable? What about Windows One Care online beta scanner from Microsoft itself? I need a final word here. Can anybody help me please? Registry Mechanic does not provide system restore option for Vista, that’s another worry. I have a choice between Registry Mechanic 7 and One Care online Scanner. Can anyone guide me here?
